Just Energy Transition / Mexico Scenarios

Mexico faces a complex energy landscape, characterized by declining fossil fuel resources and sustained growth in energy consumption. This report addresses the challenges of the energy transition in the country, offering a comprehensive analysis that combines the current sector diagnosis, future projections, and a roadmap for implementing inclusive and sustainable public policies. The country has a significant history as a producer of oil, natural gas, and coal, positioning it as a prominent player in Latin America. However, reserves of these resources have decreased significantly over the past two decades. Despite being an oil exporter, Mexico relies on the importation of natural gas and coal to meet domestic demand. The report emphasizes the need to diversify the energy matrix, moving toward more sustainable sources to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. Furthermore, it highlights Mexico's role as a regional leader, committed to balancing economic growth with an inclusive and low-carbon energy transition.
